Kids photography tips

I learned the hard way about trying to get kids to pose for a shot - capture them playing is the best way to go, and also catches them being kids. For babies, help from a parent is the way to go to get the baby's attention, as well as memorable expressions.

I like to use a speed light with a diffuser, even outside, because the e-ttl will adjust the flash accordingly so I can dash shadows if I need, or back light with the sun. If I'm inside, bounce flash, plus natural light from a window works great. I will set my iso a little higher, like around 400, so the flash doesn't have to work so hard, allowing quick recharge time between flashes, and less over-heating. One more thing I like to do is to use a 1.4x extender with my 24-105mm zoom. Using the extender let's me get closer to the subject and gives a very shallow d.o.f..

Just my thoughts.

Hi Marcelo,

I have a seven-year-old son and can tell you that I was always grateful for a lens and camera with a quick autofocus. But to me it seems even more important to be patient. It takes time to let the kids forget the camera, so they can act and behave naturally. And check out Greg´s video on that topic. It helped me a lot.

Best regards
Olaf

Thank you Olaf!
I agree with you that it is an excellent tip "to be patient" with kids either photographing or educating them!

De nada, Marcelo. So with your 24- and 21-year-old kids you know, what patience is about, right :-)

Olaf, my new friend!

I don't know which "generation letter"my kids are X Y Z Z1 Z2, really don't know, the only thing I know that my patience has gone for two alphabets complete.
