Background Blur...

I was wandering if there is a way to get the same background blur, if you can't shoot at say F2.8
Besides buying a better lens.
Are there other settings you could use to accomplish this?

There are a number of factors that change bokeh...
  • Subject to background distance (farther, more bokeh)
  • Subject to camera distance, (closer, more bokeh)
  • Aperture, smaller number, more light, more bokeh

Does that help?

Here is a little illustration of what Greg said.

This was shot a f4.5 @ 200mm I was as close to the model as I could get to keep focus and frame, and the dry river bed was about 10 to 15 feet behind her.

You know, I think that lens isn't registering on Flickr... This had to be shot at f5.6 I was using the cheap Sony 50-200. The "best" lens I had at the time.

Good answer. Couldn't add anything except...that this topic also shouldn't be in "suggestions". As I have said, people are misunderstanding what "Suggestions" is actually for. It's for suggestions to do with improving the site, not suggestions for technique, advise, equipment etc. The definition of "suggestions":

"Have some feedback and input to share?
Don't be shy and drop us a note. We want to hear from you and strive to make our site better and more user friendly for our guests and members a like."

Can a mod move this too please? :)
