Shooting with both the D700 and D7000 and have tested the VRI against the VRII. The VRII has better optics and vignette on the D700 as the corners are sharp with the VRII and soft on the VRI, but when shooting on a DX body none of these are a factor.

Better VR...maybe a full stop, but most people won't even notice. Hence shooting on a DX body the VRI will be perfect and I'm with you as well Greg. I'm still very happy with the VRI, I would rather buy another D700 or upgrade to a D3s than upgrade that lens.
