FX lens in DX boady

I had seen that Greg commented in one you tube video, that using FX lens on DX body only gives you cropping effect. So if i use 50mm 1.8G on DX body will it give goodness of 85mm Portraiture lens (50*1.5 = 75) or jest the cropping effect.

Hi there,

The sensor of a DX body, is smaller then the sensor of a FX body. For the fact i know, a DX body is a multiplier of 1.6x vocal length.

So yes, if you have a 50mm lens on your DX body, that will have the vocal length of 50x1.6= 80mm.

You will not have a "cropping" effect, your focal length is bigger, so you have to do a couple of steps back in comparison to a FX body. Which uses the full sensor, so you have a vocal length of 50mm.

Hope i answered your question. Sorry about my English :)

Greetings,
Roy

It not really a cropping effect per se. If you put a 50mm lens on a DX body it is still a 50mm lens but, because the sensor is smaller you are only getting the center portion of the lens/image, or the equivalent field of view as using a longer lens on a FX camera.

Eh, it's 1.6 times the focal length on a Canon but 1.5 times on a Nikon Roy. :)

So, a 50mm will actually become a 75mm on a Nikon DX and 80mm on a Canon.

But yeah, Roy pretty much perfectly answered your question though. ;)

You Wiseass....

You know.. i am a Canon shooter.. i do know nothing about Nikons :(

You know that song?

When I walk in the spot
This is what i see
Everybody stops and is staring at it
I got a passion in my hands
And i aint afraid to show it (show it, show it)
I shoot Canon and I know it
I shoot Canon and I know it

I knew you were a Canon shooter, yes. I'm a Nikon user but actually seem to know a lot about Canon equipment thanks to people like you. :P

I'd never heard that particular tune before, but it was very entertaining. :silly: Perhaps us Nikon shooters should get one? :P

Well Conor,

I know some basics about the Nikons :).. Just some overall stuff by looking to video's from Greg, DRTV and some guy with very much hair who should be a salesman now...

But, here you go, A NIKON song..

Go into your menu and switch the crop from FX to DX and vignetting fixed.
