now if only i could justify spending $3500 on a camera..... looks awesome though! hopefully some of the improvements from the mk3 and the 1DX trickle down to the 7D replacement
Canon T2i (550d) 24-70 f/2.8L, 50 f/1.8

Not to sound totally like a Nikon fan boy, but to me the 5DM3 is not much of an upgrade per se, more of a revamped Mark II. Basically same megapixel, body, and some changes to the video. The only real 'upgrades' I see is the AF and the ISO performance, though the Mark II was no slouch in ISO performance. I see they used the AF from the 1Dx which is a nice thing, but not the metering system, which is puzzling.

I have also heard that people consider the D800 not much of an upgrade from the D700.

The real changes or upgrades from the 700 to the 800 (purely in terms of numbers) is:

•12MP vs. 36 MP

•No video vs. video†

•1,005 pixel meter vs. 91,000 pixel meter*

•Good 51 pt AF vs. slightly improved 51 pt AF**

•D800 can now AF at F/8††

•Single CF vs. CF+SD (same as 5DM3)

•95% VF vs. 100% (same as 5DM3)

•Same ISO range as D700 just triple the resolution

•3" screen vs. 3.2" (same as 5DM3)

•Expeed 2 vs. Expeed 3 processor (Digic 4 vs. Digic 5+, 5DM3)

*Same meter as Nikon D4
**Same AF system as Nikon D4, 5DM3 same AF as 1Dx

†D800 uncompressed video out through HDMI, N/A for 5DM3

††Canon 5DM3 AF to f/5.6

So to me, the D800 is a healthy upgrade from the D700. And after all the D800 is priced at 3,000 body only and the Mark 3 at 3,500 body only, maybe a deal breaker for some.

So I will go as far as saying the 5DM3 seems like a small upgrade from the 5DM2 (especially for 3,500 USD), but the M2 is still a fantastic camera, as well as the Nikon D700.

It almost seems as though the 5DM3 should have been the Mark 2, with a pro level AF and ISO performance. Now four years later Canon is just now using pro level AF, but oddly not the same/similar metering as the 1Dx. But at least it did not get 2k or 4k video (which so many Canonites were clamoring for), which I doubt will be used for a while, it just does not seem practical given that the industry just moved to 1080p HD a few years ago.
