I don't know where I picked this tip up but I've been using it for years. Be sure to check the outside of the frame while looking through the viewfinder of your camera for extraneous stuff. Check out the video!

Thx for emphasizing that the rule is only approximate, it really hurt my photography that I took it too literally

Good tip to go around the 4 sides of the frame.
Plus try & shoot with both eyes open.
Its hard but you'll pick up things that will b ecoming into the shot plus annoying back grounds. Could be things coming into the shot that may help it. Clouds causing shadows or vice versa.
