5. Step Up with Your Own Website (It's Not Scary!)

Please, please set up your OWN website rather than using a service like wix.com or smugmug.com which will give you an unprofessional address like myphotos.smugmug.com.  Using such services seems like good option initially because it's inexpensive, easy and flashy, but you will outgrow it quickly and wish you did it right from the beginning.

Here's what will happen. You work your butt off promoting your photography, sending everyone to your "starter" website. As your popularity grows your raving fans will put back links on their blogs and social media outlets because they love your photos. At this point you realize you need more features (such as a blog) and are tired of sending someone else a percentage of your hard earned money and it's time to step up and play with the big boys/girls. Being a Big Boy or Girl on the web means stepping up your game with a real website that gives you a more professional image that fits your style and meets your expectations.

About Gregory Cazillo

My name is Gregory Cazillo, owner of Cazillo Photography and Web Design. With over 15 years of photography experience and a degree from Antonelli Institute of Photography, I have practical expertise in commercial and product photography as well as portraiture for small businesses and large corporations alike. My business, however, is primarily built on retail portraiture and wedding photography. I derive great pleasure from creating beautiful, timeless images for families and couples to treasure and share.

Gregory CazilloI’ve been told that I think like an artist. Better yet, that I SEE like an artist. Creating photographs is more than just taking a picture of a given subject. One must be able to think outside the box, to bend boring rules, and modify environments and technologies in order to exercise creative inspirations. I enjoy piquing everyone’s curiosity with original and inventive ways of thinking, ways of seeing.

I've wanted to create a photography education community since the summer of 2007 when I purchased the domain name prophoto101.com. My ideas from the good ole days was to have a forum, blog & videos to educate other photographers. I could tell back then how limited the web was on good photography techniques and information. I was reintroduced into teaching photography about two years ago by a fellow photographer John Ansley who owns one of the oldest photography studios on the Main Line. In 2009 he suggested I start teaching classes at Main Line School Night as a way to promote my work and teach others. Since then I've gained a local following of photographers & enjoy teaching and answering questions for thousands more photographers all over the world.

6. EXPAND YOUR CREATIVITY

Some pet peeves of mine are people who either

#1 use a product, lens, or post processing technique to create the same image over and over

or

#2 refuse to expand their creativity with other techniques very readily available to them.

About #1: don't get me wrong, there is something to be said about having a photographic style you stick with, but you should still be able to create basic images like small family portrait groups without leaving unwanted stuff in the background of the shot. In other words be sure everything in the image belongs there. If it doesn't belong, take it out or move to another location. Be sure you have your basics down first then move to the more advanced images.

#2 leads us to Ansel Adams: Some traditionalists refuse to edit their images in Photoshop because they feel it's not a part of the art of photography. Well guess what? Ansel would edit the heck out of his images with an enlarger then create a copy negative when he had the perfect image. If that isn't the first 'shopping' of a photograph then I don't know what is.

The digital darkroom, or editing in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, etc is the same as what Ansel was doing. Enhancing images in post processing is a part of my creative process. Cameras can't always capture exactly what I see when I'm taking the photo, many so there are times I need some manipulation in order to create what I intended. The key is to use Photoshop as a tool, not a crutch. Continually having to fix images later on the computer is not what being a Pro or Advanced Photographer is about.

Gregory Cazillo has over 15 years of photography experience.  He graduated from Antonelli Institute of Photography Just outside of Philadelphia Pennsylvania in 2002 studying portraiture.  He has worked in commercial photography, product, and portraiture for many large corporations and small businesses alike.  Greg’s primary goal is building his business on so called ‘retail’ portraiture; families who want great portraits to remember and share as well as couples who want amazing photography on their wedding day.

Greg thinks like an artist. Or better, he SEES like an artist. While most people look at life's straight lines, its height and depth and width, Greg is bending the lines with his imagination and turning black and white into shades of blue and yellow.  And in conversations with clients or with his friends he will ask, "Do you see what I see?" A few might, most don't, but he consistently piques everyone's curiosity with his own original and inventive ways of thinking. Greg approaches a task with as much imagination as organization, and with a willingness to bend and modify in order to exercise some urge of creativity.

Greg is always available for your photography question or if you would like to hire him for an upcoming photography need.
